If you change the club in any way during the course of play, accidentally or not, then you can't play with it anymore. So, for example, if you bend the shaft, or mess up any other part of the club, outside of just normal wear and tear, then you've got to bag it. It's a screwy rule, but it has a purpose. Was the rule talking about cosmetic modifications? It seems like they'd have to take the club head apart to prove that it was actually modified. Golf is supposed to be a game of integrity. If after being informed of the rule, Kim should have been left with the decision as to whether he should disqualify himself, since there seems to be no clear cut application of the rule.
