What a final round today. Padraig with some amazing putting on the last three holes. And no way did I think he was going to make par on 18…an incredible display of scrambling there. Paddy got a great break with that lie in the rough. He was able to pick it clean and get great spin on it, just an amazing stroke of luck that you have to get sometimes if you’re going to win a major.
Sergio is the bridesmaid again. Poor guy. You know he felt sick when Harrington canned that 10 footer. As I watched the replay, he did react much, but that’s got to be a feeling worthy of purging.
The scary thing is both of these guys are going to be on Europe’s Ryder Cup team, and they are both playing absolutely stellar right now. Who really wants a piece of Harrington? That guy is just a beast, and incredible golfer who is taking advantage of He Who Shall Not Be Named’s absence to make a name for himself.
In other tourney notes, my wife’s pick of Steve Stricker (+12 T39) outlasted my picks of Lee Westwood (MC) and Anthony Kim (+16 T55). Congrats to Katie for kicking my butt.
And J.B. Holmes with one of the biggest blow-ups in the last group of a major championship, shooting an 81 which was led off with an opening triple-bogey. He earned every bit of that triple, too. I love Nick Faldo scolding guys like Holmes who just bullishly hit driver on every hole. When you can hit as far as Holmes, routinely 300 plus, why not just hit a 3 wood off the first tee?
So the PGA’s contrived playoffs are coming up, which means the Ryder Cup is the only thing left in this golf season to look forward to. What really sucks is that the Cup is right up the road from me in Louisville. Had I known I would be in Nashville this time last year, I would so have tickets right now. Congrats to Ben Curtis and Boo Weekly for playing their way on the U.S. team this weekend. They join Phil, Stewart Cink, Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim and Justin Leonard. Captain Zinger will make his captain’s picks in a few weeks. You gotta think Stricker is one of the picks, but pick #2 is wide open…maybe Rocco?
That’s all I got for now. If you want real golf analysis, watch the Golf Channel. Until next time…
