A million dollars richer without having to meet Howie Mandel? Not a bad gig. (Image: remjr/Flickr)

First off, I must admit that I didn’t watch one second of this tournament. As I’ve admitted, my interest in watching golf wanes a bit after the Tour Championship.

So I can’t offer much input or analysis about the Turning Stone Resort Championship. But, after reading the recap of Dustin Johnson’s one-shot win, one thought occurred to me: Here’s a Tour rookie, 24 years old, and in a matter of four days, he just banked a million bucks.

Thursday morning, little did this kid know that in a matter of days his life would change. But isn’t that what’s great about the PGA Tour? You earn your way. No five-year guaranteed contracts. No teammate to pick you up when you have a bad day. It’s all on you. Play well; earn well. Play poorly, then back to Q School.

For those of us who might feel the nerves in a Division 2 golf tournament or a local club championship, it’s truly impressive to see this kid succeed in these circumstances…with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line.

Johnson must feel great about life tonight. He’s a million dollars richer and is guaranteed a spot with the big boys next year. Three spots out of the top 125–the number needed to guarantee exemption on the Tour next year–Johnson jumped from 128 to 41 in just four days. What a weekend for the young chap.
